. . . WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ALL ABOUT?

Cat-Naps

Marissa Levy

Raquel's Boys

The diskettes

Welcome to Cat-Naps, where if you can't read a review in under 15 seconds (about 150 words or less) it's too long. This is where we take a look at some of the locals, the smaller indies, and other stuff that we aren't sure what to do with. No grades, just the basics...

JN is back, and reviews three bands from around the country you have probably never heard of. But that doesn't make it right.

Marissa Levy - LookMaNoHands - 2003

Lisa Loeb? Oh, no, it's Marissa Levy. I wonder how Lisa feels about so many female artists being compared to her? Anyway, back to Marissa a pleasant singer-songwriter album here. It has the required up-tempo songs, and soft quiet ballads. It's not offensive, it doesn't smell, but unfortunately, it probably won't leave you wanting for more. I know there are a lot of folks out there who love this genre, I'm just not sure I'm one of them. If only there was just something new here. Not to take it out on Marisa, it's a fine album, and if played live with some energy, I could certainly be entertained. There, now I feel better.

Raquel's Boys - Music For the Girl You Love - 2004

It takes all kinds. And Raquel's Boys are truly the kind you don't expect still to exist. Think, the Beach Boys if Mike Love wrote all the songs. These self-admitted lovers of the mid-60's California sound certainly play the part. Be clear here, we are not talking about the psychedelic sound being brought back by bands like The Tyde . No, this is the good boys coming to pick up your daughter in a Woody' kind of sound. And they will bring her back by 10:30. A little surf-rock here, a little vocal harmony here if only we could throw in some leather jacket thugs, maybe we'd get somewhere. This direct quote, right off their site, tells it all:

The reason a lot of people don't like the Beach Boys is the same reason we love 'em.  It's music to celebrate life.  Songs about pleasure are way hipper than some geek bringing more negativity to the world.

Amen boys! C'mon, you knew someone was still buying Annette Funicello posters.

The diskettes - The diskettes - 2003

Winners of the best presentation award, the diskettes self-titled debut comes in a hollowed out 5 ¼ floppy disc. Genius! The duo of David Barlcay and Emily Beliveau are a bit of a low-fi version of Mates of State , if you minus the piano and throw in some Hawaiian shirts and a rico-rico. It's not exactly catchy, but it does occasionally put a smile on your face; that folks still make music like this. Border-lining on stuff you might here at 6 am on a Saturday morning kids show, this avoids the schtick label by being genuine. I bet these two are the life of the parties and they don't drink a drop. Kinda annoys you how high on life folks without a beer in their hands can be sometimes. Ah, give me some Bossa Nova Love.
