. . . WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ALL ABOUT?

A mix tape can be about many things: A broken heart, a new love, a roadtrip, an ode to someone special. Or, in this case, an ode of sorts to 2004. We have put together the 16 most memorable tracks we could think of. We tabulated these 16 in a very unscientific manner, so don't expect any formulaic reasoning. Maybe it was the guitar lick, or the lyrics, or maybe it just made us stand up and dance. Below in no particular order, is our 2004 mix-tape.

"Evil" - Interpol

"C'mon C'mon" - Von Bondies

"Girl Anachronism" - Dresden Dolls

"The Rat" - The Walken

"Walking With a Ghost" - Tegan and Sara

"Dreams" - TV on the Radio

"Somebody Told Me" - The Killers

"99 Problems/ Helter Skelter" - Danger Mouse

"Take Me Out" - Franz Ferdinand

"Pattern Recognition" - Sonic Youth

"Float On" - Modest Mouse

"Run" - Snow Patrol

"The Power is On" - The Go! Team

"Somewhere Only We Know" - Keane

"Sad and Lonely" - Secret Machines

"Yeah" - Usher

The merits for other songs not on this list could be argued, but you can't hate any of the songs above. Some are overplayed (see The Killers or Modest Mouse) and some were stuck on less than stellar albums (See Danger Mouse or Von Bondies) but in the end, each of these tunes flat out get you moving, whether it's the air guitar or the shake of your booty. And many of these tracks are online and legal to download, so why not check them out before 2005 hits you over the head like the 800 pound gorilla it is.
