Be grateful that you live in Washington
DC: the city big enough for three
sold out nights of Prince, but
not big enough for three sold out
nights of
Rilo
Kiley. If you lived
in New York or Los Angeles it would
be a very different story. The
Los Angeles band has moved from
indie to indie to major label,
and their tickets sell like wildfire,
but they still have the familiar
charm of your old neighborhood.
Lead singer Jenny Lewis is like
the babysitter you had a not-so-secret
crush on. And just like Rilo Kiley's
latest album
More
Adventurous,
the band's live performance truly
showcases her crystal clear voice.
It's been said that people fall
in love with Rilo Kiley on the
spot. Find out for yourself on
Sunday night. Cross your fingers
for the joyous crowd sing-along "With Arms Outstretched" although
I've heard they've taken it off
the setlist on this tour. Chant
for it. It's worth the looks you'll
get.
Be sure to get to the show early
for the first of three bands,
Tilly
and The Wall. Hailing from Omaha
by way of Atlanta, T&TW are
a fivesome full of energetic pop
songs and clever lyrics that will
remind you of all the best parts
of high school (if you're out of
high school, that is). These twenty-something
former and current members of
Park
Ave. and
Bright
Eyes have a knack
for bringing back the nostalgic
sounds of teenage years without
coating them in angst. The three-part
harmonies and creative percussion
(tap shoes and tin cans) create
a whimsical atmosphere of fun and
you guessed it, love. If you haven't
heard yet, the band's record label
is called Team Love and it was
co-founded by longtime Tilly friend
and collaborator Conor Oberst of
Bright Eyes and
Desaparecidos.
Check out the Team Love website
to download Tilly's excellent 2003
full-length "Wild Like Children." That's
right, you can download the entire
album for free. If you like what
you hear, go to the Black Cat on
Sunday and pick it up.
Smack dab in the middle of these
two bands you'll find
Now
It's Overhead. The darkest and most
relaxed band of this three act
bill, NiO is the project of Bright
Eyes musician and co-producer Andy
Lemaster. Featuring vocals by Maria
Taylor and Orenda Fink of
Azure
Ray, the band hails from Athens,
Georgia, and their latest album
features vocal contributions from
local granddaddy Michael Stipe. "Fall
Back Open" is a perfect autumn
album with its crisp pop sounds
and cool atmosphere. Let's see
if the band can recreate this mood
while sandwiched between two of
the most grin-worthy upbeat bands
you're bound to see at the Black
Cat these days.
