I've been fond of Two if By Sea for some time now. Something about their slightly Interpol-esque, grimy new wave really got its hooks into me. Now they can get their hooks in you, too! See what John if by Sea had to say about Baltimore, Richmond, and teenage girls, and then go check out some of Baltimore's finest as they embark on life as a quartet all over the place throughout the next couple of months (no, really). You can start Saturday March 4 at Sonar ($5), and Wednesday March 8 at a BigYawn Presents show at DC9, along with Asobi Seksu and Stamen and Pistils.($10).
Fill in the blanks:
Touring is:
Fun, exhausting, boring, cathartic, deadly, lonely, crazy, crazyfun… but I can only speak for myself since a band is x as many members being part of something.
Our first gig was: Nov.21 2001, with Cris singing February 2002.
Our favorite venue to play is: Baltimore.
Hygiene on a tour is: Depends how long and where we are going, but its not too bad -- relatively.
Our favorite thing about touring is: See first question.
And the least favorite thing: See first question.
City with the best audiences: Baltimore.
The band member most likely to disappear after a show is: John -- can't stand the pressure.
The tour bus/van smells like: Moldy bread.
Laundry is: a) washed regularly, b) washed irregularly, c) we go shopping a lot: We travel prepared to die, a clean set of clothes everyday.
What's the most unusual item on your rider? Wish we had one, we haven't broached the subject, but I imagine hair supplies and tacos.
Who controls the music in the touring vehicle? Driver gets to DJ but we're fairly democratic after a few days.
Your new favorite watering hole after being on tour? And/or the best place to get greasy, hangover-curing food? Dirt Church.
Most amusing memory from your current or most recent tour? This woman in Easthampton, Mass. telling David he has nothing nice to say and that U.R.I. is cute.
Please name the city you wouldn't ever play in again? Or, if not a particular city, which
venue makes your skin crawl?
Richmond - have you seen those Civil War Statues? Boring crowds. The club owners are nice though.
What bands have you really enjoyed doing shows with? And who do you dream of touring with?
Shade -- from Pittsburgh. Diggs -- from NYC. On tour with BOC!
Apart from the obvious cd, what's the merch item of yours you think people should shell out for? Our T.I.B.S hair brush- no lie. $10.
Have you been to the top of the Washington Monument? Baby, we are the Washington Monument!
How do you know when you've played a truly amazing gig? Nobody is upset, we all get laaaiiiid.
What do you make of the local (Baltimore, D.C., or both) music scene these days? Great, anyone can start something neat at any time.
How's it going as a four-piece? U.R.I. WE MISS YOU AND YOUR FLYING KEYBOARD!!!
What would you like people to be saying about Two if by Sea in 50 years? A-holes, complete a-holes.
Please recite a line of poetry: We are poetry.
And finally, it's BigYawn's round. What's your poison?
Legal poison - Sparks or whiskey.
Illegal - teenagers.
