y favorite monster was always Godzilla. Something about his dinosauresqueness and very bad attitude that made him so appealing to me, I think. My least favorite monster was the one waiting under the bed for me when I was younger. Now we all have a new bunch of brooding Californian indie monsters, Monsters Are Waiting. Lolita-like lady of the vocals Annalee Monster sat down with my questions, and comments below on all things Monster (Philly! Underwear! Bush!). Monsters Are Waiting rolled through town late last year, but you can check them out on February 13th at the Rock and Roll Hotel, opening for Stellastarr*.
Touring is: loads of fun and excitement for all!
Our first gig was: Silverlake Lounge.
Our favorite venue to play is: well mine is (annalee) the Wiltern in LA.
Hygiene on tour is: rolling around in some dust...
Our favorite thing about touring is: loading everything out of the trailer and then back in, over and over. We love it!!!
And the least favorite thing: loading everything out of the trailer and then back in...
City with the best audiences: NYC.
The band member most likely to disappear after a show is: oh most definitely Andrew.
The tour bus/van smells like: well sometimes sushi and sometimes doughnuts.
Laundry is: a) washed regularly, b) washed irregularly, c) we go shopping a lot: probably all the above.
What's the most unusual item on your rider? Non-alcoholic brewskis.
Who controls the music in the touring vehicle, and what are you listening to at the moment? Eric, and the last thing we listened to is PJ Harvey.
Your new favorite watering hole after being on tour? And/or the best place to get greasy, hangover-curing food? Truly Vegan
Restaurant.
Most amusing memory from your current or most recent tour? Eric barfed in his bag during a show.
What's your favorite thing to do while on tour? When I get back to the hotel the bath is waiting.
Please name the city you wouldn't ever play in again? Haven't played enough to have a grudge so soon... haha.
Or, if not a particular city, what venue makes your skin crawl? The Philly show we played to 2 people and they weren't from Philly, they drove from NYC to see us.
What can people look forward to at a Monsters are Waiting gig? oh good times...
Apart from the obvious cd, what's the merch item of yours you think people should shell out for? The underwear should serve some purpose I think.
Have you been to the top of the Washington Monument? No.
What would you like people to be saying about Monsters are Waiting in 50 years? "Are they still alive?"
Please tell us about Bear's surgery fund. Well it was our friend Sixes' idea to raise some money, and she made the Myspace link and everything and it was really nice.
Favorite and/or best monster ever? George Bush? Not really.
Please recite a line of poetry: When you're running into home and you feel a big wet load, diarrhea! Diarrhea!
And finally, it's BigYawn's round. What's your poison? Red Bull and nice swift kick in the ass.
More Monsters Are Waiting goodness can be had here: www.monstersarewaiting.com and www.myspace.com/monstersarewaiting.
What is this Riding Shotgun, you might ask? BigYawn knows you're not happy simply with the excellent music being made these days. Oh no. You want more. So, Riding Shotgun takes you beyond the official website bio. Think of it as a chance to get to know the people behind the bands you know and love (and the bands who you soon will know and love!). I'll track down good bands coming to town, corner them, and have them answer the burning questions. And they've agreed -- because they're such nice people.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
