What is this site all about?

My original concept for BigYawn involved a couple of CD reviews, and a personal web log. Thanks to some inspirational people, it became clear to me that it could be so much more. The goal here at BigYawn is to create a musical community, a hub of sorts, for the Washington DC area, but also for everyone else. Many of the features and ideas you see on this site can be found in similiar fashion on plenty of other sites, more than a few of which are now empty internet carcasses. No place does it all on one site. We recognize that good music exists everywhere, from major label performers, down to the guy in his basement with a four-track. Regardless of the who and where, we want to tell you about them. Washington has long been a city lacking a musical "scene". There are pockets of communities and artists, but nothing more far reaching than a few listservs. Our goal is to change that, to bring fans and artists together. We do not pretend to know everything about music. Music is subjective, but good music can transcend. Whether you live in Arlington, VA, or Chicago, IL, we want you to be able to come to BigYawn for news and information. Our motto, "Oxygen for the musically starved mind", says it all. We all need some fresh air, a new perspective musically. It is easy to become tired of the same old same old. So take a deep breath...and let us do the rest.

Why DC?

'Cause that's where most of us live. And honestly, it is a scene that is in need of a revival.

Can I write for BigYawn?

Maybe. We accept show reviews from just about anyone (though we don't post them all), but if you are interested in joining our staff, send us an e-mail at info@bigyawn.net. While we aren't actively searching for writers, you have one chance to impress us.

How do you choose what music to review?

Our humble beginnings require us to be picky, but eventually, we'll review anything we can. At this point, we try to comb all of our musical tastes to come up with some good CDs, or some we think might be good. Not every review we do will be positive. As time goes on, there will be many, many negative ones. Hey, they can't all be good.

Will you review my CD?

Whether you are a local DC band, or a successful recording artist, or both, we will try and review your CD's. We will not review demo's, but any EP or LP we receive will likely be heavily scrutinized by our staff. You may not always like what we have say, but it's still free press.

What about my demo?

We love demo's. We do however, recognize the fact that they are often not the artists best work. In lieu of reviewing them, we submit them to the gauntlet, which is the Demo of the month. Each month 2 bands will square off against each other to battle it out. Even we don't know what the prize is, but it'll sure be cool.

Where can I send my Demo, CD, Press Kit, T-shirt, love letter, hate mail, etc... ?
